Violin squeaky tone when i play in the middle of the bridge ?
Q: why is it that when i play in the middle of the bridge of the violin the tone isn’t that nice, it kinda makes a whistling sound. That’s why i play near the fingerboard..
sorry but i mean i’m not playing on the bridge. i’m playing between the fingerboard and the bridge and i get a whistling sound
A: Playing on the bridge will make a scratchy sound.
Ponticello, literally “on the horse,’ is a special sound best used sparingly. There is more of it in modern music, but one of the Beethoven quartetts, perhaps op.138, has a wonderful ponticello passage. Amplified ponticello is in the background music for the Exorcist. The piece is called “Night of the electric insects,” by Milton Babbitt.
You will find that the closer you play to the bridge, the more intense and loud the sound will be. The farther you play from the bridge, the more soft and mellow the sound will be. Playing over the fingerboard is called “flautando,” for the similarity with the sound of a flute.
