Not really. I have a friend who made the switch in our High School Band with no problem at all. Fingerings are the same on a tenor as an alto and the reed is just a little bigger, as well as the mouthpiece. You shouldn’t have any problems. Good luck!

Marching baritones and marching euphoniums are really alot alike, but there are a few differences. Baritones have a different bore size than a euphonium. In other words, the radius of the tubing in a baritone is smaller than that of a euphonium. Second, euphs are really big huge instruments, especially the marching versions. Marching one of those (especially in a drum corps) is just about as hard as carrying a tuba in front of your face.

The main difference though is the quality of sound that you get between the two. Since euphoniums have a larger bore, they can take alot more air, but they also have a lower register than the baritone. Euphoniums usually play the bottom baritone parts (cause its hard to play high on a euph).

Phantom Regiment is a good example of the difference of sound from bari to euph. Listen to their “baritone” line. It sounds like a church organ, very dark and deep. That’s the kind of sound you get out of a euphonium. Awesome.

The mechanism is called the octave key. My guess is that you saxophone got hit around that area and now the octave key pad is no longer correctly covering the hole. Repairs of this type are not do-it-yourself repairs, so I’d recommend taking it to a music store no matter what the problem.

The History Of The Saxophone

One of the most popular instruments in the world is the saxophone. If you doubt how popular it is, you simply have to look at Jazz and try and picture the genre of music without it. The truth is, the saxophone has a history that dates back to the 1840s with Adolphe Sax, who specialized in the clarinet. While working at his father’s instrument shop, he began to work on an instrument that was a cross between a clarinet and a brass instrument. Through his work, he used the brass body of the ophicleide, the conical bore of the oboe and the fingering of the flute, with a single reed mouthpiece like the clarinet. The saxophone was truly a Frankenstein of instruments.

In 1846, he applied for a 15-year patent in 1846, which encompassed 14 versions of the design, split into two categories of seven instruments each, which ranged from sopranino to contrabass.

By the time his patent ended in 1866, numerous copies of the saxophone came into being that improved on the design and fingering methods. One improvement was making the bell slightly farther extended and adding one more key to extend the range downwards. While Sax’s original fingering techniques were quite simple, they have become more and more difficult, thereby making the range of the saxophone much longer.

The saxophone has become a hallmark of a variety of different music genres, most notably Jazz, where it is an accepted piece of the music that helps the genre develop an amazing sound that cannot be equaled by very many other genres. Beyond that, it is often used in soft rock and other types of classical rock.

During the 1990s, possibly the most famous saxophone player in the world was none other than former president Bill Clinton. Many credit him playing the saxophone on the Arsenio Hall Show in 1992 with helping him win the presidency of the United States because his playing of the saxophone helped him relate to younger voters, who came out in record numbers to elect him.

Overall, the saxophone is one of the most popular types, and coolest, forms of instruments that currently exist. It is often identified with laid-back types of music like Jazz and soft-rock. It has been used by a several different people, including a president, and it is also one of the most difficult types of instruments to master. The Frankenstein of Instruments is truly a revolutionary piece of brass.

The use of the saxophone has expanded over the years. It is not included in more modern classical pieces and is seen more in orchestras. It adds a different sound and color to a work that no other instrument can mimic. It may be made of different instruments, but it does not sound like any other. It is truly a unique instrument.

A saxophone is usually chosen by young musicians for two main reasons. The first is if they intend to play jazz. The second is as a secondary instrument to add to the number of instruments that they can play. This enables them to be able to get more musical jobs later on.

A: Unfortunately I can’t find an easy serial number list for E&S. If you want to look up the company name and serial numbers, you may find something. The company is more famous for its clarinets than its saxophones. They were never really considered the best in any way, but they were a good mid-quality manufacturer.
It might actually be a C-melody saxophone. They have the same goose-neck as a tenor, but are slightly smaller. If it is a C-melody, I would definetely not get it because it isn’t usable in bands. It works a solo instrument, but it would be reading stuff like oboe music only, but you would want that read by an oboe player.
The split octave is an older manufacturing choice (20s area and earlier though some do appear sporadically throughout time) and has long been stopped as a technique due to better manufacturing. I personally wouldn’t pay much because it would only be of benefit to a collector or a historian. It won’t play better than saxophones that are made today, and intonation is a big issue with vintage saxophones.

Berg Larsen Mouthpiece?

Q: Well, I recently came across a mouthpiece that my grandma gave to me after her father died. He was an extremely experienced saxophone player, and owned at least one of each of the common saxophones… the problem is, she doesn’t know what saxophone this mouthpiece is for, and I can’t figure it out! It doesn’t seem to work too well on the bari (too small), and it’s not working on the alto (just fits weird), but I haven’t really tried it on anything else. Here’s what I know about it:

A: I looked it up and it appears the Berg Larson 85 is an Alto Sax mouthpiece. MORE INFO: Actually, there is also a Tenor 85. So if it doesn’t fit the Alto and it’s too small for the bari, maybe it’s a tenor. It’s really hard to tell without seeing the mouthpiece.

A: Hi! I’m a clarinetist but ligature companies are the same for sax and clarinet. There is not a specific ligature for mouthpieces, but they do all work differently, so you might want to try a couple.

I prefer to use metal ‘reverse screw’ ligatures for the following reasons: they pull the reed against the mouthpiece more evenly and they don’t stretch like cloth material ligatures do. In terms of metal you can try brass, gold-plated, silver or rhodium. They all have a different sound. I actually play on the cheapest metal ligatures that are reverse. No gold, silver or fancy stuff….

Rovners stretch, so you might want to buy two at a time, for one day you will notice that your reeds don’t stay on, or you can’t tongue as well. When they are new they’re great.

I can describe the latest release from Jazz super group Weather Report for you with just one wordÂ… Outstanding!

It’s a rare day indeed that I get a CD from an artist that I can truthfully say does not have a bad track in the bunch. I’m more than happy to announce thatÂ’s exactly what I must say about this one. There simply is NOT a bad one in the bunch. No fillers here at all.

One of the refreshingly nice things about this CD is the way all of the participating artists seem to be really enjoying themselves. Combine that with the overall presentation and youÂ’ve got one of Weather Report most impressive releases ever.

Overall Mr Gone is excellent from beginning to end. One of those CDs that after a few listens the songs are just etched into your memory. A must have for the Jazz fan. Really sensational from beginning to end.

While this entire CD is outstanding some of my favorites are track 2 – River People, track 3 – Young And Fine, and track 8 – And Then

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 – The Pursuit Of The Woman With The Feathered Hat. Outstanding!

Playing the saxophone may prove difficult at first.  Just like any other musical instruments, learning how to play the saxophone requires technique and skill.  These skills and techniques however can only be acquired through constant practice and actual playing of the instrument.  As a commonly acknowledged fact, nobody fully learns how to use any Musical Instrument by just merely reading how the instrument is played.  Although theoretical knowledge may prove to be essential and beneficial to the student or player of the instrument, it is not however sufficient.  Learning how to use a saxophone means that the person can “actually” play the instrument.  This can only be realized if one starts to pick up the saxophone and starts playing it.  Henceforth, it is only through constant practice that the necessary skills and techniques will be developed.  Eventually, the beginner will become adept at playing the instrument.  The aforementioned is true regardless of which type of saxophone is to be used

However, not all saxophones are the same.  The instrument actually comes in different types, shapes, and sizes.  The main difference however is the music that is produced from each instrument.  Baritone Saxophones, otherwise know as “bari sax” to distinguish them from baritone horns, are generally accounted as the heaviest and largest among the different saxophone instruments.  In fact, players of baritone saxophones put some harness to support the weight of the instrument.  Thus, if the player is not concerned about the size or weight of the instrument, then playing the baritone saxophone should not be much of a problem.  

Bass saxophones are also, more often, played in the bass section of soul tunes or music because of the low range of the musical notes it plays.  Among the other types of saxophones, baritone saxophones have the lowest range and notes.  It thus becomes a good harmonizer in bands.  With this note, baritone saxophones are commonly distinguished from other types of saxophones through its distinct rich and deep tone.  Thus in a band or orchestra, it provides the deep musical pulse in the group because of the deep tone which is inherent in it.   Ideally though, the use of baritone saxophone is recommended only after practicing, for a time, with tenor saxophone or the alto saxophone.  But then again, if one intends to play bass, soulful, deep tone, and harmonize it with tunes in the higher range, the use of baritone saxophone may be a good choice.  One point to consider though is that since baritone saxophones are relatively harder to play and manage compared to, for instance, alto saxophones and tenor instruments, constant practice by way of playing the instrument is strongly advised.  In this way, the player will get accustomed to the instrument and will eventually become comfortable playing it.

Some other considerations that must be taken into account in playing baritone saxophones would be the way to hold the saxophones.  This is important considering that the saxophone is heavy and it is played with a harness supporting it.  The position or way of holding the instrument ensures that the instrument will not produce a bad tone as a consequence of holding it incorrectly.

A: Yamaha’s saxophones are very durable and they are not a bad choice, but often the prices are very high purely because of the name.

Since you have experience, the new selmer saxophones come with extra keys that numerous other brands do not. This will allow you to expand your range.

Conn Is a good brand, but is predominantly a brass maker. I’d recommend it if your were buying a trombone, but I personally do not like the way a Conn alto feels.

If you go to a music shop, test the brands and see what you like the feel of. Stay away from eBay if you can
