Does tenor or alto sax sound better playing slow standards from the 40s and 50s?
Q: I play clarinet, but I want to learn sax to play slower fingering songs like Stardust, Tenderly, Lulaby of Birdland etc. And I want to get a trio with a piano player and bass or drums. I like tenor sax but I wonder if alto sax might be best. Guidance needed!
A: If your a clarinetist go for a Tenor because it’s it B flat tuning just like a clarinet (or a trumpet) The alto is in E flat tuning and doesn’t sound as nice.
what’s the best USA city to be a jazz/blues musician?
Q: i want to move where i can get more gigs. i am a jazz and blues sax player and have been playing pro for 10 years or so, but the cities i’ve lived in haven’t had enough gigs for me to make all my living playing. is chicago a good place since it’s known for jazz and blues? or are all the musicians starving there too?
A: New Orleans is the best place to get the feel of jazz/blues. Memphis is good for country and gospel.

Berg Larsen Mouthpiece?
Q: Well, I recently came across a mouthpiece that my grandma gave to me after her father died. He was an extremely experienced saxophone player, and owned at least one of each of the common saxophones… the problem is, she doesn’t know what saxophone this mouthpiece is for, and I can’t figure it out! It doesn’t seem to work too well on the bari (too small), and it’s not working on the alto (just fits weird), but I haven’t really tried it on anything else. Here’s what I know about it:
Hard Rubber
Berg Larsen
Under the MP it says “85″, then under it is an “O”, then under that is an “M”.
Any idea what saxophone this is for?
A: I looked it up and it appears the Berg Larson 85 is an Alto Sax mouthpiece. MORE INFO: Actually, there is also a Tenor 85. So if it doesn’t fit the Alto and it’s too small for the bari, maybe it’s a tenor. It’s really hard to tell without seeing the mouthpiece.
Sax Stand How can you twirl/flip your saxophone while marching? ?
Q: So in our marching band, when the cymbals crash in our cadence and other cadences, the trumpets twirl or flip their trumpets…and I think but I”m not sure, they are behind me, that the trombones do something…oh and the flutes and the clarinets do it too…so yea basically our sax line does nothing during that and stand out. We went to an OU football game and watched the Marching 110 and their sax line twirled or flipped theirs. Lol so I was just wondering if anybody knows how to do it because we would LOVE to know! Lol.
A: I wouldn’t do it. It sounds like a great way to do some real damage to your sax.
