Its got a split octave. Missing the key above the ‘b’ key that I have never used also missing the high F # key. They guy said it was at least 75 years old. It has brand new pads and had to have been relaquered. Rollers on the right pinky keys except on ‘G#’ and low ‘b’ and left pinky keys C# and C. If you need anymore info let me know. Any help is greatly appreciated…thank you in advanced.
A: Unfortunately I can’t find an easy serial number list for E&S. If you want to look up the company name and serial numbers, you may find something. The company is more famous for its clarinets than its saxophones. They were never really considered the best in any way, but they were a good mid-quality manufacturer.
It might actually be a C-melody saxophone. They have the same goose-neck as a tenor, but are slightly smaller. If it is a C-melody, I would definetely not get it because it isn’t usable in bands. It works a solo instrument, but it would be reading stuff like oboe music only, but you would want that read by an oboe player.
The split octave is an older manufacturing choice (20s area and earlier though some do appear sporadically throughout time) and has long been stopped as a technique due to better manufacturing. I personally wouldn’t pay much because it would only be of benefit to a collector or a historian. It won’t play better than saxophones that are made today, and intonation is a big issue with vintage saxophones.
