How do i find a Flying V Guitar body outline?

Hey, I’m making a guitar and I was wondering if there was a site that has the exact dimensions, and outline of a flying V guitar.

Hi Steve! The bad news is that there is not an exact pattern available for a flying V guitar.

During the 1990s, musicians, collectors and guitar dealers were paying ever-higher prices for classic vintage guitars. Gibson took notice of this activity and began to introduce a new series of replica instruments called the Historic Collection. These Historic guitars were marketed to collectors of modern instruments, as well as players seeking the vintage look and feel. Gibson’s Custom Shop began to build a 1959 Flying V reissue model. Since most of the original Flying V manufacturing drawings were lost when the Kalamazoo plant closed, the arduous task of re-creating new design drawings began. The Custom Shop obtained several vintage instruments to examine and measure, ensuring proper construction details. The first Historic Korina Flying V prototypes were built in 1991 and displayed at the NAMM Show. A few years later, Gibson changed the name of the guitar to the 1958 Flying V. Then, in 1998 Gibson changed the name back to the 1959 designation. They are produced in limited quantities presently and are as rare as the originals. The 2001 List Price for this guitar is $13,992.00.

The good news is there is a considerable amount of information found on these sites as to dimensions of certain areas, and the one picture gallery give really good close-up photos that should help you to some degree.

Also, if there is a music store in your area that is familiar with this type of guitar, perhaps they would be able to help connect you with an owner of a Flying V guitar that would be willing to let you place the guitar on a sheet of butcher or craft paper to trace an outline around it.

Some of the photos in these galleries also are of excellent quality, many appearing that the instrument is flat on a surface an photographed from directly above. It would be worth contacting a kinkos/fedX or an architectural rendering firm to see what their large format copy machines for blueprints could do as far as enlarging one of these photos.
