Used Selmer
Hi, I am wondering what mouthpiece should be used for an alto sax in a highschool band.?
Q: I have a Selmer Series III. It is a professional sax but I am not sure what kind of mouthpiece to get. I recently upgraded from a student model, and have no idea what brand, or number mouthpiece i should get. Thanks
A: There is no “right” answer. While the guy above did recommend Selmer, which is a dependable brand, it may not be what you want. I would recommend that you go and try as many mouthpieces until you find one that gives you the tone that YOU want. That would also be something to consider, is what tone are you aiming for? I personally don’t care for selmer because I never get the tone I want. Go try mouthpieces to find one that you like.
Also, the reed is made to match the facing of the mouthpiece (space between the reed tip and mouthpiece tip). A soft reed is for a larger facing, and a hard reed is for a smaller facing. A hard reed doesn’t work well in a large facing, and vice versa. Once you choose your mouthpiece, then experiment with reeds to find what strength and brand works for you. Again, this is different for every player, so experiment.
