Pipe Organ
Why would replacing the air inside a metal organ pipe with helium gas raise the pipe’s pitch?
Q: a. Helium lowers the total mass of the organ pipe so that metal pipe can vibrate more rapidly.
b. Helium has a lower pressure than air, so it allows the metal pipe to vibrate more rapidly.
c. Helium is less dense than air, so it accelerates more rapidly than air.
d. Helium has a lower pressure than air, so it accelerates more rapidly than air.
A: I agree, C, the speed of sound in a gas increases as density decreases.

Vintage Violin
Selling a vintage violin?
Q: I have an Old violin made in Czechoslovakia. It appears to be in good condition, other than it needs to be restrung.
The label on the inside says
Salaba Břetislav [the violin's manufacturer's name]
private manufacture of [violins, cellos and such group]
certified violin manufacturer
Of course this is translated from Czech. to English
By googling the manufacturer, he was born in 1894. There is a site that gives a little info but it is in Czech and therefor I can’t read it.

My question is, how do I go about valuing and selling this instrument? I don’t want to put it on eBay, as I doubt I can get it’s true value.

A: You really should go to a violin dealer/seller who will be an expert in this field and can give you an independant valuation. The value of an instrument depends largely upon its geniology (not necessarily if it looks nice and sounds nice) and if it has a named maker (like yours) than this often makes it more valuable.
A dealer can also sell it for you- and take a comission (10-15%). That’s what I would do…
