Selecting Authentic Native American Hand Drums For Playing

As an interior designer, I have always loved Native American hand drums for their natural beauty when used for rustic decor, and for the significant role they play in American Indian drum music. Most people I meet do not realize that these hand drums are among the most famous cultural icons in the world. For hundreds of years, American Indian people relied on their belief in the extraordinary power of these drums for spiritual and healing purposes, and have always thought of the hand drum as a prized possession among all Native American musical instruments.

Even though all Native American drums have comparable characteristics about them, you may not realize that native drums vary in many ways depending on the tribe. Some tribes use the hand drum exclusively in secret ceremonies, whereas in others, they are the main focus of the public event or powwow.

Native people also use these hand held musical instruments for dance, personal meditating and in sweat lodges. No matter how they are used, the hand drum still plays a key role in American Indian music and in Native culture today.

When purchasing one of these beautiful drums to add to your western style home decor or for playing in a drum circle, it is important to choose one made with quality materials similar to the original materials used. The traditional, all natural hand held drums used throughout Native American history, were made of wood cut from a downed tree trunk.

When cut properly, the long thin strip of wood curled to form a ring that measured two to six feet in length, depending on the size of the hand drum desired. Once the drum ring was properly bent, it was held with one end overlapping the other and held in place with a piece of rawhide lacing. Allowed to dry naturally in the open air, the remaining wetness in the hand drum hoop would evaporate, allowing the ring to shrink to the right size.

As you study the history of the many tribal hand drums made, you will notice that they were covered on either one, or both sides of the drum hoop with animal skin. Various woods and hides were used depending on the Indian tribe and where they were located geographically, but the most used materials were pine, and goat skin.

These days, Native American hand drums are made using a variety of animal hides, but traditionally, goat skin rawhide was the preferred skin because of its stretching ability and sound quality.

Now days, you can quickly find Native American hand drums online and in stores that specialize in western and American Indian home decor. Whether placed on the wall in a cabin or lodge to enhance rustic decor, or simply being used for ceremonial drumming and music groups, these Native drums will add great character to your home and environment.

Drum Hardware for a Complete Drum Set

A drum set is like a well-built house with foundation and framework. This framework includes drum pedals, stands, toms, lugs, hoops, tension rods, and drum racks. And the foundations are the drum shells. All these together make up the drum hardware of the drum. Just like a house cannot be built without foundation and pillars, the drum is incomplete without the hardware because it acts as the pillar of the drum. Each of the hardware has different role to play.

Drum hardware basically refers to various kinds of stands that hold up the drum and the cymbals. Let us start with the most important pieces that play a vital role in building up the drum set as well as drum sound.

The pieces of metal that are attached to the side of the drum are the lugs. The main aim of the lugs is to attach the Drum Hoops or rim, which is fixed with the help of tension rods. Hoops mainly hold the drumhead in place and even help in tuning the drum.

Coming to the drum shells, it refers to the material used in the drum. Like, beginner’s kits are made up of basswood or mahogany but higher kits are made up of more costly woods to get better sound quality.

Adding next piece of the drum hardware, i.e. the pedals. Therefore, a combination of dual chain, dual spring and footboard makes a tough pedal.

Next important parts of the drum hardware are the stands. Stands give support to the whole set to provide proper positioning to it. The types includes:

- Boom stand: The most longest of the other hardware, the boom stand provides easy positioning to the cymbals anywhere around the kits.

- Cymbal stand: This drum hardware not only supports the cymbals but also hold toms, cowbells and tambourines as well.

- Hi-Hat stand: This is one of the vital parts of the hardware. It is like a Straight Cymbal stand that has a spring-operated pedal connected to a rod that opens and closes the top hi-Hat Cymbal. This cymbal is linked with the clutch that has a hole in the middle where the rod fits and is protected in the open position by a screw. The drummer needs to place both the feet on the pedal, while using hi-hats in the closed position, and just hit the lever and the hats drop. And has to do vice-versa to reset it to the open position.

- Snare Stand: A snare is played most of the time and so it is necessary to have a solid snare stand. It is better to use Double Braced snare stand rather than using single braced that are light weighted and move often.

Another important part of the drum hardware is the toms. They are greater than the stands by 14” and have legs to stand on their own. Once the drum is assembled it is mounted on the toms. It should be mentioned here that the sound quality of the drum depends on its positioning on the toms.

Junior Gold Stocks Benefit from Stabilizing Equity Markets

Junior gold stocks may finaly make a move. The New York Stock Exchange indicator for new lows reached an extreme of 1304 on Tuesday the 15th of July. That was even worse than the 1100 new lows reached on the 22nd of January. Such extremes spell one thing P-A-N-I-C.

Whilst its difficult to infer any far reaching conclusions about one day sell-offs, even panics, the odds now favour a bounce in very oversold equity markets. What will work during this period of relative calm?

We had noticed a very definite flight to safety since market volatility began in October 2007.

Firstly, a flight away from common Dow stocks to Gold Mining Stocks because gold is seen as world wide currency which is more secure that worthless paper money. The Dow stocks have slowly been decreasing in value for the past year as gold mining stocks have been increasing in value overall. Gold stocks is were the smart money is moving into.

Within the Gold market this has manifested itself as a flight to bullion and away from Gold Mining Stocks. Yes money had been moving gold stocks higher but the majority of gold investors are buying bullion or the gold bullion etf (actual gold bars) because it currently has lower risk than trading gold mining stocks. So gold bullion and the gold bullion etf’s have been out performing the price of gold mining stocks for the past year even thought both Gold and gold stocks have increased in value.

Now that there is a good chance equity markets will stabilize, the trends will moderate and reverse. This means Junior Gold stocks prices should begin closing the valuation gap and discounting higher earnings based on $900+ Gold.

The remainder of 2008 looks set to be very bullish for Gold Stocks and Gold Stock Juniors Gold Stocks in particular! August to December are the best months for gold for the past 40 years so we are looking for higher prices in the near future.

Many investors do not like the thought of junior gold stocks because of their volatility. There is a solution for this and it is to trade gold etf funds. The are exchange traded funds which trade like a stock but allows your to own a piece of each gold mining company and it provides less volatility. The two main etfs are GLD and GDX ticker symbols.

Well the number of boxes… probably one for every item, cymbals will come separate from their stand, so 3 toms, one base, snare, hi hats, crash ride, crash, Snare Stand, hi hat stand, 2 cymbal stands, and the sticks, probably 13 boxes, which doesn’t really say much because some boxes will be much bigger than others. The stands fold up really well so their boxes will be very small, and cymbals are quite skinny so they will have small boxes as well, but the actual drums will likely have fairly large boxes, especially the base. As for room you’re probably talking about a 3 meter by 3 meter area to fit comfortably and not be crowded, it’s a lot of space, but that’s what drums are.

The Award For Most Improved-The Electronic Drum

There are lots of different associations that can be made with the word “drum.” Depending on your age, where in the world you are from and what kind of music you listen to, you may picture anything from a Caribbean steel drum to a Chinese “fou” drum when you hear that word. Yes, there are a great many faces to the instrument commonly known as “drum.” But I must admit would be curious to know how many people, when asked what they associate with this word, would come up with the electronic drum.

Whereas a traditional drum of any vintage uses acoustic vibration to produce sound, an electronic drum uses an electronic waveform or sampler. Instead of being an instrument with a shell and a drumhead, these instruments have electronic drum pads. These pads contain either piezoelectric transducers (transducers that use crystals to generate electric potential in response to applied mechanical stress) or force sensitive resistors (two-terminal electronic components that can oppose electric current by producing a voltage drop). While this is perhaps more than most people want to know, the upshot is that when one of these pads is struck, a voltage change is triggered in one of these components. This produces signals that are then transmitted to an electronic drum module, or “drum brain.” The brain translates the signals into waveforms, which in turn produce the percussion sound that corresponds to the pad that was struck. So leaving aside all the technical jargon, electronic drums are used exactly like regular drums, except that you have to plug them in first.

Electronic drums have been around since the very early 1970s. Graeme Edge, drummer and songwriter for the band The Moody Blues, and Professor Brian Groves of Sussex University pioneered the first electronic Drum Kit for the band’s 1971 album. This kit and its early kin had a number of flaws, among them the fact that the sound produced was only a very approximate replica of the sound of an actual acoustic drum. There were also complaints of the restricted range of dynamic and tonal subtlety. As a result, the first electronic drum’s first decades were spent in the genres of rock, disco and techno, where they could be used to create a specific beat without having to worry about timbre.

However, recent advances have greatly improved the quality of acoustic drum kits. Pollard Syndrum, Simmons and Yamaha all now produce professional kits reputed to be nearly indistinguishable in sound from acoustic kits. Other manufacturers include Boom Theory, Drum Tech, Alternate Mode and a host of others. Improvements have included items like more realistic hi-hats, higher quality digital samples and dynamic impact detection.

As the electronic drum has improved, the ranks of its devotees have also swelled. Today, the list of professional musicians who use or have used electronic drums is a respectable one and includes: Phil Collins, Nick Mason of Pink Floyd, Roger Taylor of Queen, Stuart Elliot of The Alan Parsons Project, Bill Rieflin of R.E.M, Alex Van Halen and more.

The Zildjian ZXT series would provide a good, solid sound for the set and works especially well (in my experience) for playing with bands.

Most cymbals by paiste would provide a good, clean sound. They have some very mellow sounding rides and such that work well with jazz, soft rock, etc.

As for the Double Bass pedal, cobra is a great brand in my opinion.

Learn to Play Drums – Customising your Drum Kit!

Customising your drum kit is a very personal thing and includes the way it looks, sounds, set-up and  accessories. When I was not actually playing I would take every opportunity to watch and listen to other drummers and have seen some very weird and wonderful customisations.  A particular favourite of mine was a very good band where the drum kit was actually attached to a scaffolding frame and included a 6 feet diameter J Arthur Rank Gong, which he only used for one particular number, but very effective.

It is quite common now to see a drum kit of gigantic proportions containing as many as 8 to 10 drums including two base drums and a multitude of cymbals, although I am of the opinion that a basic 4 or 5 piece drum set is quite adequate for most of us mere mortals.

Whatever your preference it is very important that you get the essentials right and they include the base Drum Pedal, the high-hat pedal and stand, the Snare Drum and cymbals.

Base drum pedals are a mechanical mechanism and should be as smooth, comfortable and as silent as possible (no squeaks) to allow you the greatest flexibility to eventually achieve those complicated bass drum rhythms. The same applies to the high-hat pedal and stand and I would recommend spending as much as you can afford on these two items, you won’t regret it.

The snare drum will be the most used piece of your drum kit which can be made of wood or metal and should incorporate at least a 14 strand snare with adequate damping and adjustment. It is also a good idea to have a rough top skin which works well if you use brushes, ideal for jazz drums.  A good solid and adjustable stand will add to your enjoyment.

The cymbals are also an essential, but often overlooked part of your drum kit and should wherever possible be of the best quality cast bronze such as Zildjian or Sabian . I would recommend at the very least 14” high-hat cymbals a 20” ride cymbal with bell top and 16” to 18” crash  cymbal. Good solid adjustable stands with boom will help make the placement of your cymbals easier.

Finally don’t forget the throne (stool) as you will be spending a great deal of time sitting down and you will want to be as comfortable as possible, so make sure it has adequate adjustment and is well padded.

He also played roggers I think you can get a buddy rich slingerland signature kit, but you can always make your own by buying a 24″ bass 12″ tom and two 16″ floor toms, In eather Ludwig or slingerland, i Saw a buddy rich kit for sale a while ago with the BR bass drum head on and every thing but it had just been made up that way because it only had a 22″ bass, Buddy used a 24″. Id reccomend Ludwig especialy the snare, i play an old Grestch in buddys sizes with a ludwig 400 snare (ive seen buddy using a ludwig 400 snare also they have a great sound)

All About Drum Machine

Drum machines are an electronic instrument used to mimic the sound of real drums. They are used for a variety of reasons and in many types of content. From electronic use to filling in as a drum session for a missing band member, it can take it all on.

It works by using sequences with playback or a synthesizer that are used in the copying of drum timbres. They can produce unique sounds and can create unique drum beats.

In 1947 Harry Chamberlin created a tape loop based drum machine called the Chamberlin Rhythmate. It used fourteen tape loops with sliding head and allowed for playback of tracks on tape or blending of sounds.

In 1959, Wurlitzer created a device called the Sideman. It was the first ever commercially produced drum machine. It was an electro-mechanical system that used percussive accompaniment for Wurlitzer organ music and range. It offered twelve electronically made predetermined rhythm patterns with variable tempos. Sound was made from vacuum tubes which created ten present electronic drum sounds. The tempo patterns were controlled by a slider that increased rotation of a disc. The Sideman was held together in a cabinet with a speaker and an amplifier.

In 1963, Raymond Scott invented a drum machine called the Bandito. And in the later 1960`s drum machines began to accompany all organs and organists. By the 1970`s many pop stars and music groups were becoming fans and using them in their songs and music.

In the 1980`s programmable drum machines became available, and one began to sell called the LM-1. It had a distinct sound that was picked up by many singers including the singer Prince. It was so popular that drummers were beginning to feel the pinch and started buying them and programming their music into it to stay employed as a drummer. In the later 1980`s a company created the DMX which took the likening of many hip hop stars and was heard in many hip hop songs of the 80`s.

Now it is uncommon to find it that stands on its own. These days most drum machines are software based. They offer sequencing and sampling and use of loops and music workstations. The workstations use sequencing and drum sounds to create the sound effect.

Drum machines have certainly come along way. It is amazing to see how they have emerged over the years to come to the electronic sound that we hear today. It is an integral part of music and can be heard in many types of music, from hip hop to organ music. It has also made its way too many keyboard designs allowing players to mimic the sound of drums as they play the keyboard. The drum machine offers a sound as unique as they come.

7 years ago. I used to own a set of Paiste 2002s and 1 RUDE 10″ splash. Let me tell you they are very High Quality sounding cymbals, but very pricey. I was also lucky enough to record them one of my Cds too. I’ve been a loyal Paiste fan since the the late 80s. I wish I still had them today…but I will again. I started off with their cheap 400s back in 1988. Good luck

The Magic of Drum

The moment man stamped on the earth or clapped his hands; some sounds evolved which became rhythm later on. Since then making rhythm has been a part of human’s life. Rhythm is available in all types of music whether it’s a Beethoven symphony, the back beat of rock n’ roll or subtle suggestions of jazz. In many places it’s not the Drum Kit as we know it that provides the rhythmic base, but percussion instruments like congas or even triangles. All of these are a part of arsenal of the drummer or percussionist.

A drum can be small or big –ranging from a snare and bass drum to something consisting of number of drums and a big Chinese gong. At its heart is the bass or kick, drum played by foot, using a pedal. The Snare Drum which is hit uses stretched coiled wire underneath to make a sharp cutting sound. Cymbals are also a part of the kit. The high Hat Cymbal is a combination of two cymbals together one on the top of the other that can be played with either the foot on the drum stick. The other two are the ride and the crash. The ride is generally for rhythm and the other is for emphasis. Here drummers are welcome to explore the drum lessons.

Sit upright on a drum stool and keep your right foot on the bass Drum Pedal and your left on the hi-hat pedal. Take each drum stick on each hand and count four slowly. When you say one bring your foot down on the bass drum pedal. On second count hit the snare drum directly in front of you with the stick in your left hand. On the third beat kick the bass drum hard again but twice. Then on four hit the snare once more. When you read this it may sounds easy but when you actually do it you will discover that it needs lot of concentration and dedication to master this art. But once you practice the basic backbeat pattern until it’s become second nature, you can add another layer. With your left foot, push down on hi-hat pedal to close it and keep it that way. Now as you play the drum pattern, use your right arm and hit the hi-hat cymbal on each of the four beats. Once again it will probably take time and effort to play properly.

You need co-ordination to beat drums. The best drummers, whatever style they play are incredibly well co-ordinated; they can make it seem like four limbs operate completely independently and still produce a perfect mesh of rhythms, often shifting emphasis as they go. Once you are comfortable with these basic steps you can bring variation to your music. Instead of using hit-hat, play the four beats softly on the ride cymbal and bring your foot down on the hi-hat pedal for emphasis when you hit the snare drum. Whatever you do it takes a practice and perfect practice. Listen to what other drummers play and you can even search for a good music teacher to learn more. They bring music alive one note at a time. So go ahead give it a try and play from your heart.
