The Role of the Saxophone Section in a Big Band

The saxophone section in a big band consists of 5 players – two altos, two tenors and one Baritone Sax. In a traditional big band setup, the saxes are located in the first (front) row of three rows of horn players. The trombones and trumpets are found in the rows directly behind the saxes.

Saxophones are considered agile instruments, much like the clarinet and flute. They are able to play fast lines or perform effects that cannot be achieved so easily on a brass instrument. This characteristic gives them the ability to cover very fast passages within the ensemble – passages that would be too difficult for the brass section to pull off.

Melodic Roles

Saxophones are often called on to state the melody of a big band composition or arrangement. Playing in unison gives them the power to cut through punches and harmony played by the brass section. When stating the melody as a section (i.e. 4-5 part voicings) the lead alto player must project the lead line so it can be heard above other instrumental activity going on within the arrangement at any given time.

Saxes can also be coupled with other instruments to create a homogeneous sound. Altos are often combined with trumpet, while tenor saxes are most often found sharing a melody with one or more trombones. These melodic couplings work well because the timbre of trumpet and trombone are similar to the alto and tenor respectively. Baritone sax at times plays melody alone, or coupled with Bass Trombone.

Harmonic Roles

Because the sax section covers a wide range, it lends itself well to supplying harmony and harmonic “pads” to a big band arrangement or composition. In ballads, for example, the saxes are often written as lush voicings that provide all the necessary notes of a chord. They are used in this manner within an arrangement as background to a soloist, or as counter melody to another instrument.

Solos and Solis

The tenor saxophone is one of the more popular solo instruments in jazz, so it only makes sense that tenor solos are written quite regularly throughout the big band music repertoire. Although any of the saxes are called upon at one time or another for solos, the tenor seems to get more improvised solos than the others. Baritone sax solos are written sparingly throughout big band literature. Depending on the level of skill of the players, solo sections can be passed around so that good soloists – even bari sax players – have a chance to shine.

Sax solis occur when the saxophone section is featured by itself by playing a composed jazz “solo”. A soli is most often composed in four or five part harmony that is voiced for the entire section. The lead line is played by Alto 1, while the rest of the section is voiced below the lead line and follows in rhythmic unison. In a four part setting, the bari sax player will often double the alto melody at the octave.

The saxophone section is an integral part of any big band in a variety of ways. Brass players may complain that the saxophones are written too many solos, but it is hard to beat a terrific saxophone section ripping through a difficult Thad Jones or Don Menza soli. As they say, if you can’t beat them, join them!

Alto Clarinet

Alto Clarinet
Alto Clarinet Alto Clarinet
Are there any common reeds that work with the Contra-Alto clarinet?

My high school has an old Contra-Alto clarinet sitting in a locker that I want to learn, but I can’t play it very well because all of the reeds in the case are cracked and broken in some way. Does anyone know if it can take, like a tenor sax reed or bari sax reed or something like that, because our reed cabinet doesn’t have Contra-Alto reeds, and I don’t want to buy one if its the wrong size.

Sax reeds are longer than clarinet reeds. Sometimes they work but usually not. A bari sax reed is just about equal (but longer) to a bass clarinet reed. You’d need a bass sax reed for a contra and the bass sax reeds are way more rare than contra reeds. A bari sax reed is just a touch too narrow for the contra clarinet.

You don’t really want to play on reeds that were left in the case unless they’re new in the box, you don’t know where those have been. Go to your local music store and get an EEb Contra Clarinet reed or order one online.

Guide To Saxophones

Saxophones are conical-bored transposing steel or brass instruments. A member of the wood wind family of musical instruments, the saxophone is played with the help of a single reed mouthpiece, much like a clarinet. The saxophone was created by its inventor Adolphe Sax back in 1841.

One of the most common of all musical instruments used in modern music today is the saxophone. Used in almost every genre including jazz, rhythm and blues, hip hop, and other forms of contemporary music. There are many different kinds of saxophones, including the alto saxophone and the tenor saxophone.

The alto saxophone is a medium sized saxophone that is in the key of E flat. Well known as one of the most commonly played types of saxophones, the alto sax is the perfect started saxophone. The tenor saxophone is a type of saxophone that is much bigger than the traditional alto saxophone. Tuned to the key of B flat, the tenor saxophone also uses a much larger mouth piece.

There are many web sites online that have saxophones for sale too at reasonable and affordable prices. Some of the better brands and manufacturers to look for include Cannonball, P. Mauriat, Selmer, Yamaha, Unison, Leblanc/Vito, Keilwerth, Yanagisawa and Buffet Crampon. Be careful though when buying used saxophones, as theft is a common occurrence in bars and clubs where jazz bands are frequent. Tell tale signs of thieves selling stolen used instruments include filed off serial numbers, extremely cheap prices, and the seller’s ignorance of the used saxophone he or she is selling. Clarinet Flute

Clarinet Flute
Why does my school’s jazz’s band have a flute, but no clarinet?

Clarinets just seem more like a jazz instrument. And also, the flute player says she sometimes doesn’t have a part, so she has to transpose someone else’s part into her key. Why doesn’t our jazz band offer a spot for a clarinet?

In the modern big band (the format after which your school’s band is likely modeled) there are trumpets, trombones, and saxophones; the saxophonists may be called upon to double clarinet or flute (or even double reeds), but it is truly rare to see a band where one of the woodwind players plays either flute or clarinet exclusively. Since I don’t know your school program I would recommend that you take up saxophone (but keep up the clarinet, too); your clarinet studies provide an excellent point of departure to learn saxophone since it is an instrument whose inventor borrowed design features of the clarinet and oboe. If you play saxophone and one or more doubles well, your director would do well to select you to play in this ensemble due to your versatility.

The History Of The Saxophone

One of the most popular instruments in the world is the saxophone. If you doubt how popular it is, you simply have to look at Jazz and try and picture the genre of music without it. The truth is, the saxophone has a history that dates back to the 1840s with Adolphe Sax, who specialized in the clarinet. While working at his father’s instrument shop, he began to work on an instrument that was a cross between a clarinet and a brass instrument. Through his work, he used the brass body of the ophicleide, the conical bore of the oboe and the fingering of the flute, with a single reed mouthpiece like the clarinet. The saxophone was truly a Frankenstein of instruments.

In 1846, he applied for a 15-year patent in 1846, which encompassed 14 versions of the design, split into two categories of seven instruments each, which ranged from sopranino to contrabass.

By the time his patent ended in 1866, numerous copies of the saxophone came into being that improved on the design and fingering methods. One improvement was making the bell slightly farther extended and adding one more key to extend the range downwards. While Sax’s original fingering techniques were quite simple, they have become more and more difficult, thereby making the range of the saxophone much longer.

The saxophone has become a hallmark of a variety of different music genres, most notably Jazz, where it is an accepted piece of the music that helps the genre develop an amazing sound that cannot be equaled by very many other genres. Beyond that, it is often used in soft rock and other types of classical rock.

During the 1990s, possibly the most famous saxophone player in the world was none other than former president Bill Clinton. Many credit him playing the saxophone on the Arsenio Hall Show in 1992 with helping him win the presidency of the United States because his playing of the saxophone helped him relate to younger voters, who came out in record numbers to elect him.

Overall, the saxophone is one of the most popular types, and coolest, forms of instruments that currently exist. It is often identified with laid-back types of music like Jazz and soft-rock. It has been used by a several different people, including a president, and it is also one of the most difficult types of instruments to master. The Frankenstein of Instruments is truly a revolutionary piece of brass.

The use of the saxophone has expanded over the years. It is not included in more modern classical pieces and is seen more in orchestras. It adds a different sound and color to a work that no other instrument can mimic. It may be made of different instruments, but it does not sound like any other. It is truly a unique instrument.

A saxophone is usually chosen by young musicians for two main reasons. The first is if they intend to play jazz. The second is as a secondary instrument to add to the number of instruments that they can play. This enables them to be able to get more musical jobs later on.

Tenon Cork

Tenon Cork

Pipe Care – Part Two: Cleaning Your Briar Pipe on a Regular Basis

Without regularly cleaning your briar pipes, they will become a sour tasting experience, and will no longer provide you with the smoking pleasure you desire. To eliminate such problems, you need to embark on a regimen of regular cleaning and maintenance for your pipes.

Tools for cleaning: Tapered pipe cleaners, bristle pipe cleaners, regular or extra fluffy pipe cleaners, pipe sweetener or grain alcohol, Shank brush or cotton swab.

Before You Light-Up: Caring for your pipes start with you very first smoke. So, if you’re a beginner, make note; Before each smoke, run a pipe cleaner through the stem to remove any ash or tobacco left behind, then gently tap your pipe, holding it by the bowl, on a cork knocker. Do not use force!

As you Smoke: While you are smoking keep the flame above the tobacco, so as not to char the rim of your pipe. If the rim of your pipes begin to darken just moisten a pipe cleaner or cotton swab with saliva and rub it. This will eliminate the dark color. If a pipe starts to have a bad taste while smoking, it is probably time for a good cleaning.

After Smoking: Before we start any cleaning remember NOT to remove the stem from a pipe while it is still warm. The stem may loosen and you can end up cracking the shank or breaking the tenon. After each smoke, you should give you pipe a thorough cleaning. Let the pipe cool down completely, and then stir up any ash and residue left at the bottom of the bowl. Cover the bowl with your fingers and shake the pipe to evenly distribute the ash along the inside walls of the bowl, which will greatly speed the formation of ‘cake’, a protective layer of carbonized tobacco and ash inside your pipe. Cake is an insulator and greatly extends the life of your pipe, guarding it against burn outs. Dispose of the remaining residue, and run a bristle pipe cleaner through the stem, repeating the process until the pipe cleaners come out clean. Blow through the stem gently to dislodge any leftover ash and wipe your pipe with a soft cloth, perhaps with a dab of your favorite Pipe polish. Place the pipe back on it’s rack or stand and allow it to rest, hopefully for two to four days before it is smoked again.

Once A Month

You should give your pipes a deep cleaning. Most smokers do it on a regular basis. Experiment with how often you should do this cleaning in time you will know what works best for you.

Extra cleaning tools: Pipe Reamer & Pick.

First, carefully remove the stem of the pipe from the bowl and lay the two pieces on a paper towel. Dip a regular pipe cleaner in alcohol and run it through the stem. It will most likely come out with some black or brown residue on it. Follow this pipe cleaner with a dry one, and repeat until the pipe cleaner comes out the same color as it went in. Run a last “dry” pipe cleaner to remove any moisture and set the stem aside. Using bristle pipe cleaners, moistened with alcohol, vigorously swab out the air-hole of the pipe, alternating with dry, regular pipe cleaners. Don’t be afraid to use a lot of pipe cleaners. Pipe cleaners are cheap, new pipes aren’t. Once your dry pipe cleaner comes out the same color as it went in, run another dry one to absorb any moisture. Using a cotton swab or shank brush, clean out the tenon, the portion of the pipe where the stem attaches to the bowl. If your stem or bowl has a band, now is the time to polish it. Carefully reinsert the stem into the bowl, and wipe it with a soft cloth with a little pipe polish . Allow your pipe to rest for a couple of days before smoking it, this way the alcohol will evaporate completely. If you have cleaned most or all of your briar pipes at once, now is a good time to smoke your meerschaums.
