Cello Bow
holding the cello bow?
so i started playing the cello in late febuary. after several yrs of guitar playing. and my instructor says that when i hold the bow, my thumb needs to be curved, my shoulder and wrist relaxed, and my pinky curved and making contact with the bow. i can do most of that, but the 1 where i keep my thumb curved just seems impossible. if i curve my thumb, it locks back up on me completely naturally, i dont even feel it happen, and i only become aware wen in begins to hurt many minutes later. if i stare at it, and concentrate to make it stay, my bow makes a scraping sound and falls off the strings to an almost 90 degree angle. and doing it in conjunction with the other aspects of bow handling just seems un doable, especially considering it happens so naturally, i;m not even a little aware of it. ive been working constantly on this 1 thing for over 3 months now. i really need sum tips, because my instructor merely repeats what is the “rite way” again and again.

Im a violinist, and what i do is i put my fingers in position, and then relax my hand. So I end up with my 4 fingers curved and my thumb straight, and i can play just fine. My orchestra teacher had us practice with pencils, if that helps any. So just hold it how your comfortable. And if your having issues, just change it to accomadate the issues. Hoped I helped.
