Not only does this meaningful URL impart information to the visitor, but for the web designer it makes sense to have the separate files arranged in a logical manner. This will only apply to pages that have not been dynamically created by a database program, of course.

* Put your keywords into the /www.dmoz.org/). This is the largest human-maintained directory of the Web. There are many places to gather information regarding your purchase; your teacher has a wealth of knowledge, she/he may recommend a certain make or model.

our local music store may carry a new/used line of band instruments. If this is the case, ask to try as many as you can, not all instruments are created equal!

If the instrument feels good under your fingers, ask if you can show it to your teacher before you agree to make the final purchase.

And finally, the very best place to buy is at a band/orchestral specialty store. Your questions will be answered by knowledgeable people and as a bonus you won’t hear any searing guitar solo’s in the background!

Questions to ask before buying:

• Is there a trial period?
• Has the instrument been “set up” from the factory?
• Is there a warrantee, and if there is, is it “in store” or a manufacturer’s warrantee?
• Ask about shipping particulars
• When your instrument is away for repair, will they provide you with a loaner?
• Are replacement parts available for the instrument? There are many affordable “off-shore” instruments found at local music stores but should you need to repair the instrument, the availability of replacement parts can be difficult.
• Does the instrument come with a cleaning kit, and all the accessories needed to keep your instrument in top shape?
• What is the return policy should you wish to return the instrument?
• Does the store offer repair services in-house, or do they send your instrument out? This is your opportunity to develop a dialog with a repair technician. The more your repair technician knows about the relationship you have with your instrument, the better she/he can assist with mechanical adjustments.

Buying a Used Instrument

Not all used instruments are in “excellent” or even “P.C.” playing condition. Should you decide to purchase a used instrument, factor in a trip to your local repair technician for a check up, and a thorough cleaning.

That being said, purchasing a used instrument is an excellent way to get a better quality instrument within your means.

Questions to ask before buying:

One way of determining the condition of a used instrument is to speak with the original owner. Ask questions like:

• Are you the original owner?
• Is it clean?
• Who has played it?
• When was it played last?
• Where did you buy it from?
• What was the original price?
• Who has repaired it?
• Why are you selling it?

Things to look for:

• Check the condition of the case. If the case is clean and free of damage, it is likely the instrument has been well looked after.
• Avoid instruments with foul smelling cases as them may have been in a flood.
• Inspect pads for ripped or fuzzy edges – this is an indication the instrument is in need of service.
• Check for dents and cracks, large and small. Look down the bore of the instrument.
• Depress the keys to ensure they move freely and evenly – listen for any clicking.
• Assemble the instrument and check that the pieces fit together.
• Check for matching serial numbers on all sections of the instrument.
• Check that all accessories are included: mouthpiece/ligature/cap, cleaning/tuning swab, neck strap, all lubricants, and cork grease.

Where to buy a used instrument:

If you decide to purchase on line, make sure you have the option of a trial/return period. Ask for warrantee information and store policies.

If you decide to purchase from a music store, ask the salesperson for the history of the instrument, and get contact information for the previous owner.

Ask for advice from your teacher or your musical friends. They may recommend a store or even a certain brand and model of instrument. Ask them for feedback on the condition and sound of the instrument once the purchase has been made.

Do some comparison shopping, make certain the time and money you’re investing for the used instrument is worth it. Research the instruments’ original cost. Visit a few shops, compare prices on-line.

Not all used instruments have been maintained alike. There is a wide range in quality of materials and methods used in the care and maintenance of musical instruments.

Could you tell me if the body is wood or plastic?

From my knowledge, Normandy was purchase by LeBlanc in the 1970s. Before, it was a separate entity, but the Normandy line were student models that are equivalent to present-day Vito clarinets. If the body is plastic (”reso-tone” or “ebonite”), you could probably get $100 at the most for it. If the body is wood with no cracks, I can estimate between $150-300. If it has a crack but it’s pinned, take off about $50 from asking price.

The Normandy lines were produced between 1940-1980s, with 4 being the first line and 10 being the latest. I can only estimate the 7s were produced in the 60s or 70s–while I could not find your specific serial number, the other numbers that ranged within the 5xxxx’s were made in that time frame. Normandy clarinets are still well in circulation though they are not being manufactured, as well as it’s partner Noblet. Those models were directed at intermediate players, so they aren’t in high demand I’m afraid:(

Your best bet, if you want to sell it, is to put it on eBay. Those people bid like crazy over simple Student Model clarinets (I got $100 out of a 10-year-old Vito 3 clarinet), especially if the body is wood or you claim it to be “antique.”

Amazing grace music has been first linked to the variant of the tune “New Britain” of which the composer is unknown and which is in William Walker’s shape-note tunebook Southern Harmony,1935. In addition to that, New Britain first appeared in a shape note hymnal from 1829 called Columbian Harmony.

Furthermore, the melody is Scottish or Irish origin since it is pentatonic and suggests a bagpipe tune. When we talk about Scottish or Irish music the Great Highland Bagpipe indeed has a large role in it since it has long played an important part of Scottish music. Although this particular form of bagpipe developed exclusively in Scotland, it is not the only Scottish bagpipe, and other bagpiping traditions remain across Europe.

The earliest mention of bagpipes in Scotland dates to the 1400s although they could have been introduced to Scotland as early as the sixth century. On the other hand, when we talk about Irish music, the harp, reels, hornpipes, jigs, mazurka, the flute, the fiddle and the uilleann pipes are the musical instruments which are commonly used in this type of music.

Amazing grace music has an origin which is a mixture of both Scottish and Irish music. It has been mentioned earlier that bagpipes in this type of music. What are bagpipes anyway? Bagpipes are a class of Musical Instrument, aerophones using enclosed reeds fed from a constant reservoir of air in the form of a bag. Even though the Scottish Great Highland Bagpipe and Irish uilleann pipes have the greatest international visibility, bagpipes of several varieties can be found in use throughout Europe, Northern America, the Persian Gulf and the Caucasus.

The Role of the Saxophone Section in a Big Band

The saxophone section in a big band consists of 5 players – two altos, two tenors and one Baritone Sax. In a traditional big band setup, the saxes are located in the first (front) row of three rows of horn players. The trombones and trumpets are found in the rows directly behind the saxes.

Saxophones are considered agile instruments, much like the clarinet and flute. They are able to play fast lines or perform effects that cannot be achieved so easily on a brass instrument. This characteristic gives them the ability to cover very fast passages within the ensemble – passages that would be too difficult for the brass section to pull off.

Melodic Roles

Saxophones are often called on to state the melody of a big band composition or arrangement. Playing in unison gives them the power to cut through punches and harmony played by the brass section. When stating the melody as a section (i.e. 4-5 part voicings) the lead alto player must project the lead line so it can be heard above other instrumental activity going on within the arrangement at any given time.

Saxes can also be coupled with other instruments to create a homogeneous sound. Altos are often combined with trumpet, while tenor saxes are most often found sharing a melody with one or more trombones. These melodic couplings work well because the timbre of trumpet and trombone are similar to the alto and tenor respectively. Baritone sax at times plays melody alone, or coupled with Bass Trombone.

Harmonic Roles

Because the sax section covers a wide range, it lends itself well to supplying harmony and harmonic “pads” to a big band arrangement or composition. In ballads, for example, the saxes are often written as lush voicings that provide all the necessary notes of a chord. They are used in this manner within an arrangement as background to a soloist, or as counter melody to another instrument.

Solos and Solis

The tenor saxophone is one of the more popular solo instruments in jazz, so it only makes sense that tenor solos are written quite regularly throughout the big band music repertoire. Although any of the saxes are called upon at one time or another for solos, the tenor seems to get more improvised solos than the others. Baritone sax solos are written sparingly throughout big band literature. Depending on the level of skill of the players, solo sections can be passed around so that good soloists – even bari sax players – have a chance to shine.

Sax solis occur when the saxophone section is featured by itself by playing a composed jazz “solo”. A soli is most often composed in four or five part harmony that is voiced for the entire section. The lead line is played by Alto 1, while the rest of the section is voiced below the lead line and follows in rhythmic unison. In a four part setting, the bari sax player will often double the alto melody at the octave.

The saxophone section is an integral part of any big band in a variety of ways. Brass players may complain that the saxophones are written too many solos, but it is hard to beat a terrific saxophone section ripping through a difficult Thad Jones or Don Menza soli. As they say, if you can’t beat them, join them!

One thing is especially important to keep in mind – now is not the time for a shotgun approach to production. The last decade was about creating massive amounts of RF imagery. Now there’s too much similar content. RM has been underserved with new imagery, but it’s a relatively small market. Micro is interesting, but a lot of hard work and not completely clear one can generate the same returns as in traditional stock. (Yes, some do, but very few.) Chill out in 2009. Figure out what you’re truly good at shooting, figure out what the market is missing and make fewer, but better targeted content. Don’t count the success of your 2009 in the number of images you produce.

Take time to get grounded in a location, check out the bookstores, post card racks, see where the “hot spots” are and work around them. You can beat the contrast big time. Revisit the same locations several times in different light.
