Hi Steve! The bad news is that there is not an exact pattern available for a flying V guitar.

During the 1990s, musicians, collectors and guitar dealers were paying ever-higher prices for classic vintage guitars. Gibson took notice of this activity and began to introduce a new series of replica instruments called the Historic Collection. These Historic guitars were marketed to collectors of modern instruments, as well as players seeking the vintage look and feel. Gibson’s Custom Shop began to build a 1959 Flying V reissue model. Since most of the original Flying V manufacturing drawings were lost when the Kalamazoo plant closed, the arduous task of re-creating new design drawings began. The Custom Shop obtained several vintage instruments to examine and measure, ensuring proper construction details. The first Historic Korina Flying V prototypes were built in 1991 and displayed at the NAMM Show. A few years later, Gibson changed the name of the guitar to the 1958 Flying V. Then, in 1998 Gibson changed the name back to the 1959 designation. They are produced in limited quantities presently and are as rare as the originals. The 2001 List Price for this guitar is $13,992.00.

The good news is there is a considerable amount of information found on these sites as to dimensions of certain areas, and the one picture gallery give really good close-up photos that should help you to some degree.

Also, if there is a music store in your area that is familiar with this type of guitar, perhaps they would be able to help connect you with an owner of a Flying V guitar that would be willing to let you place the guitar on a sheet of butcher or craft paper to trace an outline around it.

Some of the photos in these galleries also are of excellent quality, many appearing that the instrument is flat on a surface an photographed from directly above. It would be worth contacting a kinkos/fedX or an architectural rendering firm to see what their large format copy machines for blueprints could do as far as enlarging one of these photos.

The Early Days of the Miami Heat

During the boom period of the NBA of the 1980s the league sought to expand itself from 23 teams to 26 by the end of the decade. In Florida, a state devoid of any NBA franchises, groups from Orlando, Tampa/St. Petersburg and Miami all vied to land franchises.

The Miami Sports and Exhibition Authority eventually endorsed a group led by NBA Hall of Famer Billy Cunningham and former sports agent (and lifelong friend of Cunningham’s) Lewis Schaffel, who received their financial backing from Carnival Cruise Lines tycoon Ted Arison, who would be the majority shareholder of a potential franchise but defer the day-to-day operations to minority shareholders Cunningham and Schaffel.

In April 1987, the NBA expansion committee endorsed the bids of the cities of Charlotte and Minneapolis. However, the committee was split between awarding the third and final franchise to Miami or Orlando, causing representatives from both cities to toss barbs at the other. Finally, it was decided that the NBA would expand by 4 teams, with the Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat debuting for the 1988-89 season and the Minnesota Timberwolves and Orlando Magic beginning for the 1989-90 season.

For their first head coach, Miami hired Ron Rothstein, who was a longtime assistant coach under Chuck Daly in Detroit and who was credited with being one of the architects of Detroit’s stifling defense.

The Heat came into the NBA for the 1988-89 season with an unproductive first year, with a roster full of young players and journeymen. Among the players on the inaugural roster were first round picks Rony Seikaly and Kevin Edwards, fellow rookies Grant Long and Sylvester Gray as well as NBA vets Rory Sparrow, Jon Sundvold, Pat Cummings, Scott Hastings, Dwayne “Pearl” Washington and Billy Thompson. The team started out the season by losing its first 17 games, an NBA record. It did not help that the Heat were placed in the Midwest Division of the Western Conference. This forced them on the longest road trips in the NBA; their nearest divisional opponent was the Houston Rockets, over 900 miles from Miami. The team ultimately finished with a league-worst 15-67 win-loss record.

To help address Miami’s league-low point production, the Heat picked Glen Rice from the University of Michigan in the first round of the 1989 NBA Draft, and Sherman Douglas of Syracuse University in the 2nd round. The team also moved to the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference for the 1989-90 season, where they would remain for the next 15 years. However, the Heat continued to struggle and never won more than two consecutive games, en route to an 18-64 record.

The 1989-90 season saw Miami awarded with the 3rd pick overall, only to parlay via two trades (first with the Denver Nuggets and later with the Houston Rockets) into getting the 9th and 12th picks, with which they selected Willie Burton of the University of Minnesota and Alec Kessler of the University of Georgia. Both picks flopped, as the Heat tried to turn Burton, a college small forward, into a shooting guard without much success and Kessler was bogged by injury problems and was not physical enough to be a quality NBA power forward.

While Rice, Seikaly and Douglas all showed improvement from the previous year, Miami still only went 24-58 and remained in the Atlantic Division basement.

Rothstein would resign as head coach at the end of the season, but later would return to the Heat prior to the 2004-05 season as an assistant coach, a role he still fulfills today.

In the wake of Rothstein’s resignation prior to the 1991-92 season, the Heat hired Kevin Loughery, who had 29 years of experience in the NBA both as a coach and a player, to be their new head coach. For the 1991 NBA Draft, the team selected Steve Smith from Michigan State, who provided an agile guard to a more mature Heat team. With the help of rookie Smith, Rony Seikaly, and a more experienced Glen Rice, the Heat finished in fourth place in the Atlantic Division with a 38-44 record and made the playoffs for the first time. Playing the league-best Chicago Bulls, the Heat were swept in three games. Steve Smith made the NBA All-Rookie team and Glen Rice finished 10th in the NBA in scoring.

The 1992-93 NBA season included the additions of draft choice Harold Miner of the University of Southern California as well as trading a 1st round pick (which would turn into the #10 overall pick the following season) for Detroit Pistons forward/center John Salley. While Salley’s addition was first met with optimism because of the role that he played on two championship Detroit Pistons squads, it became apparent quickly that Salley was a quality role player for a good team, but not a quality player for a mediocre team like Miami was at the time. Salley would eventually have his playing time diminish, ultimately resulting in his being taken by the Toronto Raptors in the 1995 expansion draft. As for the season itself, it started off poorly, with Smith missing time with a knee injury and Burton being lost for most of the year with a wrist injury. Upon Smith’s return, Miami posted a winning record in February and March, but it was not enough to dig themselves out of the 13-27-hole they began in. They finished 36-46 and would not return to the playoffs.

A healthier squad fared better in 1993-94, posting the franchise’s first-ever winning record at 42-40 and returning to the playoffs as the #8 seed versus the Atlanta Hawks. After Miami had a 2-1 series lead, Atlanta rallied from the deficit to win the best-of-5 series. After that season, Steve Smith would be selected as a member of the 2nd Dream Team, the collection of NBA All-Stars who were selected to compete in the 1994 World Basketball Championships in Toronto as Team U.S.A.. Dream Team II, also made up of future Heat players Shaquille O’Neal, Alonzo Mourning, Dan Majerle and Tim Hardaway, would go on to win the tournament.

In 1994-95, the team overhauled their roster, trading away Seikaly, Smith, and Grant Long. In return, the Heat obtained Kevin Willis and Billy Owens.

Also, at this time came a power shift in Heat’s front office. On February 13, 1995 Cunningham and Lew Schaffel were bought out by the Arison family of Carnival Cruise Lines fame, who to that point in time had been silent partners in the day-to-day operations of the franchise until the buyout. Micky Arison, son of Carnival founder Ted Arison was named Managing General Partner. He immediately fired Loughery and replaced him with Alvin Gentry on an interim basis to try and shake up the 17-29 Heat. Gentry went 15-21 for the remaining 36 games of the season for a 32-50 record overall, 10 games off the previous year’s mark.

Guitar Effects Pedals

If you are serious about the guitar then you may want to consider investing in guitar effects. Guitar effects pedals come in lots of different shapes and sizes. Their main use is to change the way your guitar sounds.

There are thousands of different guitar effects pedals to choose from some new some rare and old – some create sounds that alters your guitar sound so much it is almost unrecognisable as a guitar sound.

Guitar effects pedals come in many different formats. You can get he single effects units – often called stomp boxes and chain them together or you can opt for a multi effects unit that combines lots of effects in one box. There are also other formats such as rack mounted effects units and processors.

For the purpose of this article I am going to illustrate a couple of the most commonly used guitar effects pedals that I consider an essential. I personally use these pedals. These can be easily chained together in whatever way you choose and changed to get the sound that you want from your guitar.

Distortion / overdrive pedals

Whilst the above is in fact two separate pedals the effect they produce are similar. I personally own a Distortion Pedal but tend to use the amplifiers overdrive effect to get the sound I want.. Basically they take your clean sound and convert it to an overdriven or distorted sound. This gives you a rock type sound found on hundreds of songs.

Wah Pedals

Wah pedals are a great guitar effects pedal. Rather than just an on/off situation this is an expression pedal. It is called a wah pedal because literally, it makes your guitar sound as though it is saying “wah”. This is great for slow and fast lead playing and produces some really great results.

Delay Pedals

This adds an echo effect to your sound. Can be used to layer multiple sounds or, more commonly, and in my case, used to beef up your lead sound. It is a subtle difference that can make such a difference to your playing.

Chorus Pedals

Another popular guitar pedal that adds depth to both your clean and distorted tone is the Chorus Pedal. This thickens the sound by doubling up notes in layers and altering delays in a very subtle way.

With guitar effects pedals there are massive differences in sound quality. Often the more expensive a pedal is, the better it will be. It is also very true, especially with the examples above, the older the pedal is the better quality sound it will produce. As with most things guitar related,  they don’t make things like they used to.

Since it is going to the Vet in the morning, I wouldn’t put any salve or antibiotic ointment on it because the Vet may want to flush the wounded area and the ointment would interfere with that. I wouldn’t offer the pup to the mother with five day old pups until this pup is examined by the Vet, and then according to Vet instructions since it does have an open wound. Tips on How to Tune a Guitar

Knowing how to tune your guitar yourself is one of the most basic as also one of the most integral constituents of learning to play the guitar. Even the most skillful guitarist’s performances can go awry if the guitar is not in tune, and tuning the guitar is consonant with the ear of the guitarist becoming one with the sound of the guitar. Thus though many novices to baulk at the idea of tuning their instrument, especially because they find the activity difficult, there are certain easy rules which, when followed, make the matter simple and effective. There are in fact several different ways to tune your guitar depending on the desired sound, and this article shall provide you with some easy to follow instructions for tuning your guitar without you having to invest in any extra equipment.

The first step is to familiarize yourself with the tone that each of the strings should produce. The sequence, starting from the thickest and going to the thinnest string, i.e. from top to bottom, is: E, A, D, G, B, E. the grave or low E is referred to as the 6th string, the A as the 5th, and so on. It is best to start at the grave E and to tune it as best as you can. Having another instrument which is in tune, like say a piano or a harmonica, makes it easier to tune a guitar, for it can then provide a tangible reference. But even without it, one can attempt the tuning based on the 6th string. Usually, because the 6th string is the heaviest, it is also the most resilient to the impact of forces that cause the guitar to go out of tune. So, this 6th string is most often already in, or close to, tune. The 6th string note should match with the 1st E below middle C. In case any other instrument or tuner is absent then simply try to get these as close as you can. What really matters is that the guitar should be in tune with itself.

The second stage of the tuning begins by your positioning the index finger of your left hand just behind the 5th fret on the 6th string. This would give you an A note. Now pluck the 5th and 6th strings one after the other while adjusting the tuning peg for the 5th string so that the two notes sound identical. Next, position the index finger of your left hand just behind the 5th fret on the 5th string. This would give you a D note. Pluck the 5th and 4th strings in turn and adjust the tuning peg of the 4th string until the two notes sound the same. The same procedure can be used to tune the remaining strings right up to the high E. This part about tuning the guitar is fairly straightforward, and easy to manage with a little practice. What is, however, more difficult is keeping the guitar in tune, and preserving your instrument against damage.

Always take precautions to keep your guitar in a place which is not exposed to extreme temperature variations. This will not only undo the tuning of the strings but may also warp and damage the wood.

It would pay to remember that any violent impact or jostling tends to cause the guitar to go out of tune. It is therefore advisable to check the tuning every time the guitar gets dropped or bumped. Before tuning any particular string which you consider to be out of tune, always remember to match it with the other strings. The one you suppose to be out of tune could very well turn out to be the only one in tune!

Learn to trust your ear. Refine it and treat it as your ally. If while striking a note or a chord, the sound appears a little off key, take the time out to investigate. If required retune the string.

If a string breaks, take care to attach the new string properly to the machine head and not only to the tuning peg. When tuning these new strings always ensure that you have stretched them to tune. You could try pressing them down with your right hand while picking them with your left. This would allow the string to stretch into tune and prevent any variations of note later on due to slackness.

And most cardinally, make it a habit to tune your guitar every time that you play. Yes, guitars do go out of tune at the slightest opportunity. But rather than be bothered by this, learn to use it as an opportunity for tuning your guitar and attuning yourself with it.

In fact, it’s just the opposite – vintage guitars consistently gain value as they get older, as long as you take the time to keep them in good condition. They’re also usually superior instruments. If you’re a musician as well as an investor, you’ll appreciate the superior action and tone of a real vintage instrument. The most popular vintage guitar with collectors is probably the Gibson Les Paul.

Here is a small example: Let’s say in 1959 you had $100.00 if you were to bury the $100.00 in a coffee can in your back yard or put it in your bank account and let it sit there drawing a couple percent interest inflation would slowly take this $100.00 and if you were to pull it out 50 years later you would find that $100.00 would barely get you a nice dinner for two. However if you would have taken that same $100.00 and gone to your local pawn shop in 1959 and picked up a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Guitar and placed it in the closet instead then you could pull it out of your closet today and it could be worth well over six figures.

People are starting to realize how much these instruments from the 50’s 60’s, and 70’s really mean to our culture.

There is a very limited supply and there still seems to be a high demand for these pieces of history which has proved to be a good choice for those who have invested in these instruments, such as the Gibson Les Pauls’ and Fender Telecasters and Stratocaster’s from the same era. (50’s, 60, and 70’s).

A good place to start collecting vintage guitars as an investment would be to focus your research on obtaining guitars from the list below.  This list includes that have been inducted into Vintage Guitar Magazine’s Hall of Fame. There are, of course, other lists and other guitars worth investing in, but this is certainly a great place to begin. Fender Stratocaster
Inducted in 1990
The VG Hall of Fame was started in 1990 and we had little doubt the Strat would be among the first instruments selected for inclusion by our readers. Three single-coils, a vibrato (usually), and that great contoured, offset-double-cutaway body. Some 50 years after its introduction, it is still one of the most popular designs.

  
Gibson Les Paul Standard (’Burst)
 Inducted in 1990
Also an easy first-year selection, LP Standard was introduced with a sunburst finish in 1958, and the ‘58 to’60 models are the most valuable vintage solidbody guitars. The Les Paul Standard is a classic no matter what finish it bears.

Martin D-28
 Inducted in 1991
The first acoustic in the VG Hall, the D-28 launched Martin’s line of incredible big and loud dreadnoughts in 1931. The D-28 has inspired many guitarists and builders, and remains one of Martin’s most popular models.
 
   
Fender Telecaster
Inducted in 1991
Leo Fender’s timeless classic is about as simple as an electric guitar can be, but still has the magic to appeal to guitarists playing just about any style of music. Every guitar player has a Telecaster (or should). Along with the Strat and Les Paul, the Tele is among the most popular designs around.

Fender Precision Bass
Inducted in 1992
The first bass in the VG Hall, and why not, it only forever revolutionized how the bass was played. One of the most innovative ideas in modern music history.
 

Gibson ES-335
Inducted in 1992
Born during Gibson’s “golden era,” the semi-Hollow Body ES-335 wedded archtop looks with solidbody performance. Whether it has dot inlays or blocks, it remains one of the coolest designs in guitardom.

D’Angelico New Yorker
Inducted in 1993
George Gruhn said of it in the March 2000 issue of Vintage Guitar, “The New Yorker is significant due to its superb quality and aesthetic artistic appeal,” and is “one of the finest guitars in the history of the instrument.”
 

Gibson Super 400
Inducted in 1993
Introduced in 1934, with its 18″ body and deluxe features, the Super 400 was the largest and most expensive guitar in the Gibson line. Its influence was soon apparent in the designs of many of the great archtops built by others. Whether the earlier non-cutaway acoustic version or the later double-pickup cutaway, it remains a true work of art.

Gibson L-5
Inducted in 1994
Introduced in 1922 and with a design guided by the legendary Lloyd Loar, the L-5 was the first modern archtop guitar. Initially a non-cutaway acoustic, the L-5 went through many changes, ultimately becoming a single-cutaway with two humbuckers.

Fender Jazz Bass
Inducted in 1995
With its two specially designed pickups, offset waist, and slimmer, narrower neck, the Jazz Bass was intended to be the more tonally diverse, slicker-playing descendant of the Precision. The fact it was available in Fender custom colors (often with matching headstock) makes it all the more cool.

Gibson Flying V
Inducted in 1996
One of the most distinct guitar designs ever created, but it wasn’t a hit when it came out in 1958. Rock and rollers discovered it the late ’60s and the V still makes a unique statement today.

Gretsch 6120
Inducted in 1996
If you play rockabilly, you better have one of these! Introduced as the Chet Atkins Hollowbody in ‘54, the 6120 soon shed the “G” brand and western inlays of the early versions, but never lost the Western Orange finish or the cool twang.

Rickenbacker 360/12
Inducted in 1997
It was good enough for George Harrison and gave us the “jingle jangle” of Roger McGuinn. That’s more than enough for the 360/12 to be the only 12-string in the Vintage Guitar Hall of Fame.

Martin D-45
Inducted in 1998
Originally the fanciest of Martin’s innovative dreadnought line. If you had one of the 96 made in the 1930s and early ’40s, your net worth would be considerably higher than it is now.

Gibson ES-150
Inducted in 1999
Gibson’s first electric Spanish guitar was also the first good-quality electric to hit the market. Favored by Charlie Christian, it housed Gibson’s first pickup, which is still in high demand and considered a classic.

Fender Jazzmaster
Inducted in 2002
Designed and marketed by Leo to cut into Gibson’s jazz market, it supplanted the Strat at the top of Fender’s line in 1958. And though its sound kept it from catching on with jazzers, garage surf bands of the day ate it up. It is one of the most copied solidbody designs of all time.

    
Gibson SJ-200
Inducted in 2002
A landmark amongst acoustic flattops, the SJ-200 was designed for cowboy guitarist Ray Whitley, and any cowboy worth his salt played one. Its popularity carried over to other genres, and never faded. From its jumbo-sized, sunburst-finished body to its ultra-fancy pickguard, bridge, and headstock, it was considered the consummate flat-top. Just ask Emmylou!

The 1954-’56 Gibson Les Paul Custom
Inducted in 2003
Can you say “Black Beauty?” Though Gibson didn’t give it the name, Les Paul himself chose black as the secondary color for the guitar bearing his moniker. Gibson did, however, use it to experiment with a three-pickup configuration and to introduce its famed Alnico-magnet pickup.
    
PRS Custom

The first production instrument from a company that has become the guitar’s preeminent modern success story.
 

Gretsch White Falcon
Inducted in 2004
Like many great guitars, it has evolved through several versions. But it has been a classic since day one, for both it sound and utterly unique aesthetic.

National Tri-Cone series
Inducted in 2005
Its warm, sustaining tone emanates from three aluminum “resonators” designed to help guitarists stand out in big-band or orchestra settings. But, soon after being introduced, Nationals were adopted by Hawiian and blues players. Today, the Tri-Cone produces what many consider the ultimate acoustic blues tone.

Gibson ES-5
Inducted in 2006
One of the first guitars built after Ted McCarty took charge of Gibson, it helped solidify the company’s position as the world’s preeminent electric archtop maker. Today, its late-’50s variant with three PAF humbuckers and Switchmaster tone control is one of the most collectible of its ilk.

Fender Jaguar
Inducted in 2006
Jumping on the speeding Fender bandwagon in 1962, it helped the company stay on top throughout the decade, with its fancy new vibrato tailpiece, sophisticated electronics, and (usually) a funky custom color. If you played instrumental rock at the time, you either had one of these or you were probably ignored!

Gibson J-45
Inducted in 2007
Martin’s “dreadnought” flat-tops were big and dominated the guitar market of the 1930s. By the early ’40s, Gibson knew it needed a big flat-top to compete, and he J-45 (”J” for Jumbo, “45″ indicating its price in dollars) was it. A 16″ round-shoulded flat-top, even in the tough times of its launch, it received a very warm welcome and has ever since remained one of – if not the – most popular Gibson guitars.

Gibson Les Paul Model (Goldtop)

Les Paul tried for years to convince Gibson it needed a solidbody in its line. Finally, Ted McCarty brought a single-cut experiment guitar to Les for his approval. Though its origianl bridge/tailpiece was far from perfect, the instrument served as Gibson’s test bed through the ’50s. Eventually, it reached the pinnacle among guitars and today sits among the top collectibles.

Gibson SG Standard
Inducted in 2009
By 1960, declining sales of the Les Paul model had Gibson looking to revamp the guitar. So the company gave it a radically redesigned, much thinner (and lighter!) body intended to better compete with Fender’s Strat. But the things that made up its very heart and soul – especially its humbucking pickups – remained. Today, the early-’60s version is a true classic.
